Peace & Social Justice Committee seeking volunteers for new program

The Peace and Social Justice Committee of Holy Savior Catholic Church is seeking to start a new service outreach program for parishioners.

The program -- called Love Holy Savior -- is modeled after the Love Wichita program, in which volunteers do small projects such as painting, yard work, and room cleanings for individuals who may not be able to do the work themselves.

The Love Holy Savior program is seeking volunteers who are willing to work from 8 a.m. to noon on a Saturday morning every three or four months.  The type of projects that will be done will depend on the number of volunteers for Love Holy Savior, so the program is not yet seeking work projects.

People who are interested in volunteering for Love Holy Savior should contact Linda Pearce at 316-773-9089.

The program at Holy Savior was led by the team of (listed with their home parish): Hayden Charles (St. Francis of Assisi, Wichita); Valan Polley (St. Francis of Assisi, Wichita); Hannah Martin (St. John’s, El Dorado); and Alec Maly (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Wichita).

Vocalist Michele Denise Michaels shares story, talents with Holy Savior

Musical artist Michele Denise Michaels visited Holy Savior Catholic Church April 20-21, spending time on a musical retreat and workshop, singing with church choirs during Mass, and speaking with young people of the parish and school.

Ms. Michaels also spent part of her time at Holy Savior sharing her testimonial and faith journey, which are rooted in her experiences.  A native New Yorker, Ms. Michaels lost most of her sight at age nine. Ms. Michaels grew up relying on her residual vision (about 2 percent), the familiarity of her surroundings, and the support of her family and community, according to her web site.

She has found great success as a singer, both individually and with a group that included her siblings and friends.

“As she worked on her singing career, Ms. Michaels began traveling to tell the story of her journey with blindness,” according to her web site. “When invited to speak, Michele sings as well. She speaks about the gift of blindness and sings about the love of God.”

Currently, Ms. Michaels is writing a book based on a question she is frequently asked, according to her website: “Are You Really Blind?”

“I know the book is about my blindness journey,” Ms. Michaels said on her web site. “I pray it is also a testament to my faith.”

Holy Savior Catholic Church thanks Ms. Michaels for her sharing her story and her talents.

Holy Savior Catholic Academy billboard goes up at 13th and Grove

A billboard promoting Holy Savior Catholic Academy went up this week at the corner of 13th Street and Grove.  The billboard is part of an effort to better advertise the educational opportunities at the academy.

The picture of Principal Dr. Delia Shropshire and the students was taken by Pete Iseman of Iseman Photography.

The Holy Savior billboard is scheduled to stay up at the 13th and Grove intersection for the next eight weeks -- four weeks on each side of the billboard.
