May God’s peace be with you. If you ever have questions regarding your child’s classwork or grades, please feel free to contact me. It is hard to believe that we are in May - our last month of school. It has been an honor to be entrusted with your child’s education. We have watched them grow through these ten months. At the beginning of the school year each student wrote down three goals that they hoped to achieve this year. Throughout the year we have looked back at those goals. This last month we will again review and see exactly how successful we were in achieving these goals. The project is two-fold. One to set the goal and strive to reach it and 2) it is okay to not reach a goal - it is not failure, it is just work harder!

I am pleased to let you know Fourth Grade has completed their state assessments! In spite of the stress and anxiety, please be proud of your student for working through the glitches. The students have also completed their social studies assessment projects and they have been graded. Our last testing is the spring MAP test to take, which we are completing now. Please continue to help your child to prepare for assessments by getting some rest, eating breakfast, and encouragement to do their best. Also please encourage your child to do their best. This last assessment incentive is a trip out of town. Students must meet their goals in all three content areas - Reading, Math, and Language Usage.

I am very excited to inform you that the 4th graders have been gifted a sponsored field trip to the Kansas Cosmosphere! The trip has been tentatively scheduled for the first week of May. As I get more information, I will be sure and notify everyone with enough notice. It will be a day-long field trip, with our class leaving around 9:00 a.m. and returning no later than 2:00 p.m.

As in previous years, we have one day for birthday celebrations. This month’s celebration date will be May 8 and will be for both May and June birthdays. If you would like to bring goodies for your child’s birthday, please know that we are asking for 1) healthy snacks (Capri-sun, apple snacks, prepackaged cheez-its, fruit snacks, string cheese, Little Debbie cakes); and 2) pre-packaged items. If you are unsure of what you would like to send to school, please contact the office.

We attend Mass twice a week. Our Mass days are Thursdays and Fridays. Please do your best to have your child at school no later than 8:00 a.m. to ensure they can participate in Mass. Our Thursday Mass is at 2:00 in the afternoon. If you pick up your child early from school on Thursday, please allow for extra time as we walk from church to class to gather belongings and return to the office.

BMPH is Bernie’s Math Power Hour! Students will receive a math packet on Tuesdays. They have an opportunity to complete the packet during their BMPH time, and then finish the packet at home. Each packet is due the following Tuesday.

In ELA we will be working on writing letters that are both formal and informal. In an era when most messages are sent via text or email, it is important for the students to understand and recognize the parts and need for letters. Students will culminate this lesson by writing letters to their 8th grade selves as well as writing a letter of a appreciation to a teacher who has impacted their lives.

In Math, we are rounding out our unit of perimeter, area and graphing. We will work continue to work on latitude and longitude as well as review our fact fluency. We will also be introducing and working with multiplying and dividing fractions. Our last content area for the month of May will be equations. These last two elements are introductory units for fifth grade. I am hopeful the students are excited about these lessons as it will give them a headstart on what to expect next year.

All students are asked to use their agendas. Agendas are important as they help students remember what assignments are due when. I will write in agendas daily and leave important information on how their day has gone and if assignments are missing. Please be sure to ask your child for their agendas so you can check on them routinely.

Students are encouraged to read at least 30 minutes each day at home. Please help them to do this, as it will build their confidence and ability to become stronger, more independent readers.

Lastly, we are in need of some classroom supplies. Please consider helping out by providing pencils, kleenex, hand sanitizer and lined notebook filler paper.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at the school. My goal is to have an open dialogue with you as parents to help your child succeed. Additionally, if something is going on outside of school, which would cause your child to be distracted or need additional support, please feel comfortable to let me know. If your child had a difficult evening or morning, let me know so that I can help them be successful in school.

We are currently in the season of temperamental weather. In the event your child cannot attend school due to the weather, please encourage your child to log in to MobyMax and Lexia. MobyMax and Lexia are vital programs incorporated into our daily schedule. Students are still striving to meet class goals and earn incentives for staying on task and getting minutes in these programs. At the beginning of the school year I provided the log in information; however, if you need another copy please let me know.

April 1 begins our summer uniform. Beginning Wednesday, April 1 students can wear shorts and red, white, black polo style shirts.

State assessment season is upon us! We will begin our state assessments on April 8 with ELA and then finish the following week with Math. Our social studies assessment project is due on April 1. The students have been working on the projects in class. Please help your child prepare for state assessments by getting some rest, eating breakfast, and encourage them to do their best. If you would like to donate snacks (fruit snacks, mints) for our class that would be appreciated. Also please encourage your child to bring a book with them to school so they can read after completing their test. The students have been taking notes in class and should have their notes with them every evening so that they can study.

We will be out of school on Good Friday, April 3 and Easter Monday, April 6.

As in previous years, we have one day for birthday celebrations, this month’s celebration date will be April 23. We will provide notification in advance of the next birthday celebration. BMPH is Bernie’s Math Power Hour! Students will receive a math packet each Tuesday. They have an opportunity to complete the packet during their BMPH time, and then finish the packet at home. Each packet is due the following Wednesday. Our BMPH packets are a great review for students as many of the math problems are directly related to our Fourth Grade Standards.

UVSaturday School is every Saturday from 9:00-11:00a with Dr. Reeves. UVSaturday school is a great way for your child to learn more about African American history, culture and traditions. In addition, there is time set aside for students to complete missing schoolwork. If your child has any missing work, I will be recommending they attend UVSaturday school. More often than not, I will be on campus in the classroom preparing for the upcoming week. Students are welcome to attend, they do not need to be assigned by administration or myself. For more information on UVSaturday school, contact the school office.

ELA:

SPELLING: As we are nearing the end of our spelling curriculum, students are encouraged to finish the assignments and complete any and all late/missing work. Students are still required to complete the packets and write their spelling words ten times each. Spelling quizzes are given on Thursdays.

READING: We are currently doing a book study in class. We are reading Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. The students are enjoying the book and learning to listen for details as the book is read. Daily revisits are helping students tie in and understand the comprehension aspect of Reading as well as connecting the dots with elements of reading - characters, setting, conflict, resolution, etc. This is helping students while preparing for bigger tasks - such as state assessments and MAP testing.

GRAMMAR: We are reviewing parts of speech from prepositions and prepositional phrases to conjunctions, subjects and predicates as well punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc.

WRITING: We will have a writing prompt this month. The prompt is the beginning of a reflection for students. The theme for the prompt is “Looking back on this year…” As students begin to work on this, there will be opportunities for students to reflect at home. Please encourage and help your child to brainstorm on ideas that are more reflective of their thoughts and not of their classmate or table-mate. This also offers an opportunity to see how they have progressed through the school year.

Please encourage your student to study their notes every evening. In the event the students have misplaced their composition notebooks, please remind them to ask for a new one. Taking notes and being prepared is very important.

MATH: We are currently working on Order of Operations. Because this unit relies heavily on the operation determining the steps, students have a difficult time. The tried and true acronym helps students remember the “first, next, next…” - PEMDAS - Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction - Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally; if you hear students saying this multiple times at home, this is why! Keep encouraging them as this unit can be very trying and frustrating for the students. Please encourage your student to study his/her notes every evening. In the event the students have misplaced their composition notebooks, please remind them to ask for a new one. Taking notes and being prepared is very important.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will work on finalizing their Social Studies assessment project. We are also finishing our unit on the branches of government. This information is very important for the students to understand. As we finish branches we will dive into the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights and how laws are created.

SCIENCE: This month in Science we will learn about plant life and plant structure. The students will follow and maintain a plant log of the rooting of a plant. Students will be asked to log daily information. This is an exciting unit for students because once the plants begin to root, the excitement for the students begin.

ELA:

SPELLING: Our spelling assignments are linked with other subjects and the necessary vocabulary words. Students must still write the assigned vocabulary words ten times and be able to explain the meaning of the words. Each week the students will be given ten review spelling words. The students will write the meaning of the words as well as a sentence for each word.

READING: We are currently working on comparing biographies and autobiographies. The students are writing information to compare both types of writings.

GRAMMAR: We are reviewing parts of speech from prepositions and prepositional phrases to conjunctions, subjects and predicates as well punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc.

MATH: We are currently working on fractions - adding and subtracting, as well as finding the common denominators, and equivalent fractions. Please encourage your student to study their notes every evening. In the event the students have misplaced their composition notebooks, please remind them to ask for a new one. Taking notes and being prepared is very important.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will work on finalizing their Social Studies assessment project. The students received a hand-out to show parents what will be entailed in the project. The students will work on the projects in class; however, there may be instances where they may need to do additional work at home. Please help encourage your child on this project as this is an individual project and scored differently than other assignments given in the classroom.

SCIENCE: This month in Science we will learn about the HUMAN BODY. The students are learning about muscles, organs, and bones. We will have in-class activities and also some homework related to this unit.

February is Black History Month. Students have projects they are working on. Please help them complete them on time. February 25 is our Black History Month Program. Our students will be doing a special presentation on the Little Rock Nine!

During these difficult pandemic times, if your child must quarantine, please let us know and we will provide you with the log in information for your child to continue to learn via internet through Clever.

As in previous years, we have one day for birthday celebrations. The November celebration day is November 22. We will provide notification in advance of the next birthday celebration. If you would like to bring goodies for your child’s birthday, please know that we are asking for 1) healthy snacks (Capri-sun, apple snacks, prepackaged cheez-its, fruit snacks, string cheese, Little Debbie cakes); and 2) pre-packaged items. If you are unsure of what you would like to send to school, please contact the office.

We will be attending Mass three times a week. We attend Mass on Monday and Friday mornings, and Thursday afternoon. Please do your best to have your child at school no later than 8:00 a.m. to ensure they can participate in Mass. If you must pick your child up early on Thursdays, please be patient as we will be in church.

To help the students prepare for state assessments, we will be taking interim assessments. These assessments help the students feel comfortable about the upcoming spring assessments. When we have our window for taking the assessments, I will let you know.

Our November activity will be celebrating All Souls Day - Dia de los Muertos. Dia de los Muertos is a day to honor and celebrate those who have gone before us. We will have a designated area in the classroom where students can bring pictures or mementos of loved ones and place on the table for all to see. We cannot have lit candles so we will improvise with battery-operated ones. Please keep pictures to no larger than 3x5 so as to leave room for everyone to participate.

Please remember the 40 Book Challenge! Students are encouraged to read daily. Once they have read a book, they are to write it on their reading log and write a summary. We also have library every Tuesday. Students are checking out books and can read those for the 40 Book Challenge as well.

November 1 is the first day of Winter Uniforms. If you are unsure of the specifics for winter uniform please be sure to check out uniform policy, it is in our agendas.

Our children’s choir is to sing at the 11:00 Mass on the Fourth Sunday of each month. If your child is in the children’s choir, please do everything in your power to have them attend Mass. Father Grelinger, Dr. Shropshire, Mr. Stutey, myself and the entire Holy Savior parish would love to see and hear the children sing.

SPELLING: As a reminder, all students have Spelling homework. On Fridays at 2:30 p.m., students will receive Spelling packets. On Wednesdays, each student is to write the full list of spelling words 10 times each. Spelling packets are due the following Friday. Spelling quizzes are on Thursday, and spelling tests on Friday. Please encourage your students to study their spelling words.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This month we will focus on the Election! The students have learned about the electoral college and how many votes each state has available. On Monday, November 4 our students participated in the mock election. The students had Voter Registration Cards that they had to provide before voting.

MATH: In Math we are focusing on our math facts. We will be working on multi-digit multiplication. This can be a difficult concept for many to grasp, so we will focus our time on reading a multiplication table, filling in missing numbers on a table, and eventually creating a table. Each day we spend 15 minutes in a classroom wide activity working on our multiplication facts. On Monday a multiplication/division packet was sent home for the students to work on each night. Students only need to do two pages per day. The packet is to help reinforce their fact fluency skills. Please encourage your child as I know Math can be a frustrating subject for many.

READING: We have completed the topic of short stories and are now into our Novel Study. This year our Novel Study will be completed as a class. We are reading The Lemonade Wars. After reading a chapter we discuss as a class and from time to time students will be asked to write a short reflection paragraph on the story and draw a picture of what they heard.

In conjunction with Math, Reading, Social Studies, and Science, the students will also learn study skills, as well as Social Emotional Learning skills. These two areas will benefit them not only socially but also academically.

One final note, and this is a request. Please encourage your child to get plenty of sleep. I know many students have football, basketball, dance, and other activities in the evening, but it is imperative that they get enough sleep. If a child is tired, we can allow them to rest; however, while sleeping, many instructions or assignments are missed. If you know that your child did not get enough sleep the night before, please let me know.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me at the school. My goal is to have an open dialogue with you as parents to help your child succeed. Additionally, if something is going on outside of school, which would cause your child to be distracted or need additional support, please feel comfortable with me to keep me informed. Happy October everyone! May God’s peace be with you. If you ever have questions regarding your child’s classwork or grades, please feel free to reach out.

Holy Savior has two school rules - 1) It is never okay to be hurtful; and 2) It is never okay to interfere with the learning of others.

As in previous years, we have one day for birthday celebrations. The October celebration day is October 25. If you would like to bring goodies for your child’s birthday, please know that we are asking for 1) healthy snacks; and 2) pre-packaged items. If you are unsure of what you would like to send to school, please contact the office.

On Wednesdays we have late start days. School will begin at 9:00 a.m. Morning extended day is not available. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.

Please be sure to note important dates at the end of this newsletter. They include late start and no school days.

In October we will have an ofrenda in the classroom. An ofrenda is an altar-type setting where we will place pictures of those family members who have deceased. I encourage all students to participate; however, I respect and understand if they do not participate. The pictures will be placed for all to see. When students bring a picture to place on the ofrenda, they will provide a background of the person. The students can begin bringing pictures Monday, October 7.

On October 30 our parish will have Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. We invite everyone to attend. The event begins at 6:00 p.m.

We will have conferences on October 31 and November 1 this year. School will not be in session on those days. I will also have a few openings for conferences the evening of October 30 if that is more convenient.

SPELLING: As a reminder, all students have Spelling homework. On Fridays (or Mondays at the latest) students will receive Spelling packets. On Wednesday, each student is to write the full list of spelling words 10 times each. Spelling packets are due the following Friday. Also on Fridays, students will have a spelling test. Please encourage your students to study their spelling words.

SOCIAL STUDIES: In addition to Math and Language Arts assessments, we will also have a Social Studies assessment. Our social studies assessment will be a project. Our project is over the State of Kansas. More information will come.

MATH: In Math we are focusing on our math facts. We are working on a variety of topics in Math. Some students are still reviewing rounding, estimating and place value. While others are moving on to lines and angles. On Wednesdays please check with your child for their Math Challenge activity. This not only provides extra credit, but also helps reinforce what they are learning.

READING: Our Poetry unit will come to an end this week and then we will be moving on to another topic. I hope the students have shared their poetry talents with you. They have all seemed to enjoy writing poetry and learning about the various types of poetry. Our next unit is Greek Mythology! From gods to goddesses - learning about Zeus to Poseidon and the powers of each. Be sure to ask your fourth grader about allusions to mythology in our daily lives! This will be a fun and exciting subject for us. What is slated to be a week-long unit, tends to expand beyond because the students really enjoy the topic!

One final note, and this is a request. Please encourage your child to get plenty of sleep. I am excited to begin the 2023-2024 school year with your child. May God’s peace be with you. I look forward to helping your child develop this school year.

I am here to educate, help, support, and encourage your child. I want the best for your child. That being said, if there is a concern you would like me to be aware of, please do not hesitate to let me know. My ultimate goal is the success of your child. I understand that at times life consumes our children, if your child has a bad morning, or I need to simply “handle with care”, please reach out and let me know.

MEALS: We order breakfast and lunch one day in advance. Each day I will ask for who is eating breakfast/hot lunch. If your child brings a cold lunch that is perfectly fine. Fast food and sodas are not allowed in the cafeteria. If your child forgets to bring a lunch we will attempt contact you; however, if all else fails, we will serve them a hot lunch. All students are eligible for free meals this school year. Menus will be sent home with students and also posted in the classroom and on the website. If you would like to receive an electronic copy of the menu, please let me know.

WEDNESDAY LATE START: Every Wednesday we will have late start. Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. Morning extended day is not available. Periodically we will have $2 dress down days. Please be on the look out for fliers or SchoolMessenger calls letting you know.

ATTENDANCE: School begins at 7:45 a.m. If your child needs breakfast please bring them to school at 7:20. If your child is going to be absent, please call the school office.

This year we will be monitoring tardies and will assign detentions. The policy for detentions with regard to tardies is as follows: “any student who has 3 or more tardies within a week (Thursday-Wednesday) will be assigned a Thursday morning 7:00 a.m. detention. Failure to attend the assigned detention, or contact Mr. Stutey/Dr. Shropshire to coordinate a time, will be assigned an additional detention.”

BIRTHDAY/HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS: As in previous years, we have a one day for birthday celebrations. We will provide notification in advance of the next birthday celebration. If you would like to bring goodies for your child’s birthday, please know that we are asking for 1) healthy snacks; and 2) pre-packaged items. If you are unsure of what you would like to send to school, please contact the office.

MASS: We will be attending Mass three times a week. Our Mass days are Monday mornings, Thursday afternoons, and Friday mornings. Please do your best to have your child at school no later than 8:00 a.m. to ensure they can participate in Mass. If you must pick up your child early from school on Thursdays, please be patient as we will be in church.

We will be using Lexia and MobyMax this year for some additional instruction. Each student will be expected to have at least 30 FOCUSED minutes a day (150 minutes per week; 2,400 minutes at semester; and 4,800 minutes for the school year). To incentivize the students, I will have various rewards for achieving their minutes. Incentives include lunch with me, lunch with Dr. Shropshire, Mr. Stutey helper, and at semester - TACO PARTY!!!! I want all students to be rewarded so please also encourage your child to stay focused on their Lexia and MobyMax.

HOMEWORK: There will be homework in fourth grade. In addition to 30 minutes of reading each evening, I will occasionally have homework for the children, if an assignment is not completed in class. Spelling packets will be sent home on Mondays, and they are to be completed and returned by Friday. In addition to spelling packets students will have to write their spelling words ten times each and they are due on Wednesdays. On Fridays we will have a spelling test.

We will again have BMPH. BMPH is a Math Power Hour! Students will receive a math packet each Tuesday. They have an opportunity to complete the packet during their BMPH time, and then finish the packet at home. Each packet is due the following Tuesday. Students who complete the packet and turn it in will receive points that will earn them an incentive field trip.

Students will be given an agenda the first week of school. We will be using these agendas to keep track of homework, special activities, as well as daily feedback for you on your child’s day. Please encourage your child to use the agenda.

Throughout the school year we will have various projects assigned, please encourage your child to participate in the activities.

One of the first continuous projects we will have is “Keep Me Focused”. The first week of school the children will individually focus on three areas they would like to improve this school year. Prior to our fall parent/teacher conferences we will do a status check on the progress of the goal for each student. We will then review again at the beginning of spring semester to re-evaluate and re-focus. Two more reviews will happen - at Spring break and finally the outcome. The purpose of this continuous project is to keep the goals in front of the children at all times. Please help and encourage your child to stick with their goals and to really work for them.

As we know things arise outside of school that impact our students. If your child is having a difficult time with a situation, please feel free to let me know. I do not need to know specifics; however, if extra care or attention is needed, I would like to do that to avoid any possible problems that may arise.

During these difficult pandemic times, if your child must quarantine, please let us know and we will provide you with the login information for your child to continue to learn via the internet through Clever.

We are in need of the following items in our classroom. If you could help out that would be greatly appreciated. Our needs are:

We continue to begin our day with Riddle me This! The students are really enjoying these, some students are even writing down the riddles to share at home.

Students are encouraged to read at least 30 minutes each day at home. Please help them to do this, as it will build their confidence and ability to become stronger, more independent readers.

January 10-20 our class will be taking our Winter MAP Tests. Please help make sure your child has plenty of rest, and is in attendance. If your child is going to be gone for appointments, please let me know so I can plan the testing time around the absence. Also, please help encourage your child to put forth their best effort for the test and to not rush through it.. I have met with the students and shared their goal for this upcoming test.

SPELLING: Students are given weekly spelling packets to complete by Fridays. Students are to write spelling words 10 times each, and the spelling words are due on Wednesdays. Please encourage and remind students to get these assignments completed.

READING: Our next unit will cover the genre of DRAMA. We will be reading various plays. The students will learn about the different terminology related to genre - including narrator, setting, theme, etc.

MATH: We will continue to work on multiplication and introduce division. We will begin to work on double digit multiplication. Please help your child continue to study their multiplication flash cards. As we begin to prepare for the state assessments, understanding processes of math applications as well as language that will be used are important and will continually be used in the classroom.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will begin learning about the geography of our country. Additionally, we will begin to brainstorm for our spring project. The spring project will be the student’s individual state assessment project. Our topic is Civil Rights of Minorities - Then vs. Now. This project is what will be scored for the state.

SCIENCE: In Science we will be working on the life cycle. From the life of plants, to insects and bugs, to humans we will delve into the similarities and differences.

We will have a practice project in the fall to help the students get comfortable with working on a project rubric. Our fall project topic is: Migrant Farmworker Civil Rights: Then and Now. We will watch videos providing the background of the movement in the 1960s, including interviews with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. We will then compare the movement from the 1960s and the movement in the present-day.

MATH: In Math we are focusing on our math facts. We will be working on multiplication. This can be a difficult concept for many to grasp, so we will focus our time on reading a multiplication table, filling in missing numbers on a table, and eventually creating a table. Please encourage your child as I know Math can be a frustrating subject for many.

READING: We will also delve into learning about Greek Mythology! From gods to goddesses - learning about Zeus to Poseidon and the powers of each. As a reminder, Mr. McGlynn teaches Math, Science, Social Science, and Religion. Ms. Santiago teaches all Language Arts subjects, as well as Art.

Ash Wednesday is March 2. We will attend Mass in the morning and begin our Lenten Season. Please discuss with your child what the Lenten season means to you. As a class we will pray in class during the day. During the Lenten season we will be attending Stations of the Cross weekly in the afternoon.

We are currently working on understanding AND writing short stories. As we draw closer to the season of state assessments, we will begin to focus on state assessments and test taking/anti anxiety techniques.

Second place went to Kindergarten. Our class took third place. We are still saving bags. We hope you will continue to support our efforts so our class to take first place and earn a chance to throw a pie at Mr. Stutey at the end of the school year. Bags will be collected through May 25.
